Coaching good driving behavior
Driving is new and exciting for teens. For many, it’s the first step into adulthood and independence. And while they are thinking about all the great things that come along with driving, they often forget about the consequences.
One of the best things you can do to help develop a safe teen driver is to attach significance to what he or she is doing. Driving is a huge responsibility that comes with very real consequences:
• Crashing
• Injury
• Damage to the car
• Increased insurance costs
• Suspended license
• Speeding tickets
• Tickets for disobeying other rules of the road
You can help your teen driver understand that actions behind the wheel have real outcomes. Remember, safe driving behaviors deserve recognition as well. Consider some of these ideas to reinforce what they’re doing right:
• Offer your teen gas money
• Offer to pay part or all of their insurance at times
• Extend their allowance of using your vehicle
Beyond what you can directly offer them, make sure they are aware of the other benefits available for to safe drivers:
• Expanded graduated driver’s license privileges
• Discounted auto insurance
Some teens will benefit from a contract. Check out one we’ve put together at [insert link when live] for you to begin talks with your teen. Try talking about your expectations with your son or daughter to emphasize the positive habits that lead to becoming a safe driver. Remember to include and discuss items like:
• Buckle up and make sure passengers do the same
• Turn off the cell phone
• Obey speed limits and other rules of the road
• Never drink and drive
• Limited or shared use of the car
Establishing a contract will take you through everything you need to discuss with your teen. It also will help your teen understand driving is a new, big responsibility that carries consequences. And the rewards you include will help you nurture the habits your son or daughter can build upon for a lifetime of safe and considerate driving.
