Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" to Close Whitefish Bay's Theatre Season

May 4, 2010

Whitefish Bay HS will complete their 2009-2010 theatre season with Shakespeare's comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 6, 7, and 8 at 7:30 PM in the Whitefish Bay HS Auditorium. This show has a collaborative quality with guest director, Mr. Tom Bruno, in collaboration with Cardinal Stritch Theatre faculty and students, encouraging a near-professional level of performance from BAY students. As this is the final show of the year, it will also be the final show for our seniors, many who plan to go on in Theatre at the next level. If you have enjoyed WFBHS Theatre in the past, you must see this final production of the year.

THE STORY: Leonato, a kindly and respectable nobleman, lives in the idyllic Italian town of Messina. Leonato shares his house with his lovely young daughter, Hero, his playful, clever niece, Beatrice, and his elderly brother, Antonio. As the play begins, Leonato prepares to welcome some friends home from a war. The friends include Don Pedro, a prince who is a close friend of Leonato, and two fellow soldiers: Claudio, a well-respected young nobleman, and Benedick, a clever man who constantly makes witty jokes, often at the expense of his friends. Don John, Don Pedro’s illegitimate brother, is part of the crowd as well. Don John, bitterly upset, makes trouble for the others.

This may be the most grounded of Shakespeare’s comedies: There are no fairies and goddesses, no teenage lovers wandering off into the woods — just a pair of sweethearts who have been hurt too many times, and another pair for whom heartbreak is new. Beatrice and Benedick are said to be engaged in “a kind of merry war,” but the start of this production shows them none too merry. These are two people who really believe they detest each other, and it takes all the manipulations of the entire Sicilian town of Messina to set the lovers straight.
