Local Swim Team “Runs for Wishes” as Part of Pre-Season Conditioning
The Germantown high school girls Swim and Dive Team is preparing for another competitive season ahead, and head coach Sara Petric will continue incorporating a community event into her team’s pre-season workout schedule.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin’s annual Walk and Run for Wishes has been a way for Petric to condition her team in a different way while also encouraging the kids to get involved in valuable causes. “The girls look forward to doing this. They are not conditioning in a pool, but they are still working together as a team, and doing both at the same time is a very rewarding experience for them,” Petric said. “It is a fun thing to do, but it also lets the girls see what opportunities are out there to help make a difference.”
The 22nd Annual Walk and Run for Wishes is a 5K walk, certified run and wheelchair race, held on August 22. The Walk & Run will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the north gate of the Henry Maier Festival Park and continue along Milwaukee’s lakefront. Nearly 2,500 participants from across the state, including Petric’s swim team, will join efforts to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and a kid’s dash for children eight and under will follow at 9 a.m. The race will begin at 10 a.m.
Coach Petric, who is now in her fourth year as head coach of the Swim and Dive Team, is expecting to have 25 high school girls, from the freshmen through senior classes, participate in this event. “Just having all grade levels of girls going out together really creates a team bonding experience,” Petric said. “The girls love doing this event because they actually feel that besides preparing for competition, they are also making a difference.”
