Joel Farren, principal of Germantown High School, is proud to announce that three senior students have been recognized in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students have earned the distinction based on their results from the 2009 PreliminarySAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
Ryan A. Kutzora was named as a Semifinalist in the competition. Ryan is among approximately 16,000 Semifinalists—less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors—who earned the highest scores in each state. Ryan will advance in the 2011 competition for Merit Scholarship awards. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be
endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the students’ earlier test performance in order to be named a finalist and receive scholarship awards.
Katie N. Roberts and Lindsey L. Smith were named Commended Students. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2011 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition. “Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Semifinalists and Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.”
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), established in 1955, is a not-for-profit organization that underwrites scholarships with its own funds and those of approximately 450 business organizations and higher education institutions to honor the nation’s scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.
