South knocks out Germantown girls
Team goes ice cold from 3-point line in 55-33 loss
In watching film of Waukesha West play Waukesha South in a game earlier this season, Germantown girls basketball coach Matt Stuve noticed that West missed a lot of open 3-pointers.
"I told my assistant that we would knock down those shots," Stuve said.
However, as the Warhawks managed to hit only two of 18 such shots in their season-ending, 55-33, WIAA regional final loss to Waukesha South on Saturday, he was forced to add the coda:
"But we didn't."
The loss ended Germantown's splendid school-record season at 18-6 as South (17-7) advanced to a WIAA sectional semifinal against three-time state champion Milwaukee Vincent on Friday.
Germantown started cold and never heated up against the host Blackshirts. It was 12-4 at the first quarter break. The start of the second period was the high-point of the contest for the Warhawks as they went on a 7-0 run fueled by a couple of fastbreak layups from Kate Benson to make it 12-11.
But the Blackshirts outscored the Warhawks 13-4 the remainder of the session to take a 25-15 halftime advantage.
Germantown would never catch a wave again in the contest.
Seniors Eliza Wortman and Rachel Hoft had 11 points apiece for the Warhawks while Katy Allen had 17 for South.
"They played a hard halfcourt man defense and did a good job taking away our penetration," said Stuve. "… Even so, we had some good looks that we usually knock down.
"Getting to sectional would have been a nice reward for this group."
