Sports Wrapups: Dec. 21

Germantown wrestling

Jesse Thielke cruised to the championship at 130 pounds and earned "Wrestler of the Meet" honors while Cody Szohr at 119 and Joel Multerer at 285 took thirds in leading the Warhawks to a respectable sixth at the E.H. Stech Invitational at West Allis Central last weekend.

"Sixth place as a team with 10 weight classes really representing us (out of the possible 14) and being a very young team, we really couldn't ask for more," said Warhawks coach Casey Gabrielson. "The kids wrestled well."

The Warhawks will now be at the Oshkosh on the Water Invitational on Dec. 29 and 30.

Thielke (13-0), a two-time state champion, dominated the Stech competition, recording first period pins over Racine Case and Mukwonago opponents and a second period stick of a Pewaukee foe to claim his title.

"He has been wrestling mistake-free all year," said Gabrielson. "The challenge as his coach is to give him something to improve on because he is really doing everything to perfection."

Szohr (7-1) went 5-1, including three pins, to earn his spot at 119, while Multerer's (10-5) only loss came to the eventual champ from Milwaukee Lutheran, as he recorded four pins in as many tries.

Other places for the Warhawks included sixths from Brandon Goesch at 103 (9-6) and Eric Bloedorn at 189 (11-6).

Menomonee Falls/Germantown girls gymnastics

The Indians dropped a 135.2-121.525 decision to Greater Metro/North Shore Conference opponent Nicolet on Dec. 16.

Despite that, the season should still be promising for the Indians, who graduated only one top performer off their varsity last season. Returnees include junior Becca Leda, who was 11th in the vault in the WIAA State meet last March.

Other returnees include seniors Abby Croft and Shelby Smykal. A total of 33 athletes are out this winter for the Indians.

Also on the varsity are seniors London Williams and Allie Holtz, junior Kelly Digerness, sophomore Bria Maltby and freshmen Marissa Arnold, Emma Brose and Aerial Holt.

In the dual with the Knights, who took third place in the WIAA State meet last winter, the only top three place Falls/Germantown earned was a third in the floor exercise from Smykal (8.725).

The Indians are now off until Jan. 6, when they host Brookfield at Falls.

Menomonee Falls wrestling

An individual title from Tony Guagliardo at 215 pounds paved the way for a ninth-place finish in the Kimberly Duals for the Indians on Saturday.

"This is always good experience for us," said Indians coach Jim McMahon. "We've been coming here five or six years now, and we've always managed to win more than we lose."

The Indians will take part in the Badger State Invitational in Madison on Wednesday and will be off until after the holiday break.

Falls turned in a 3-2 dual meet record in the 16-team Kimberly event, including a heart-stopping 37-36 decision over Pittsville in its final match. The Indians trailed 36-28 going into the final two bouts, but Dan Stark pulled out an 11-10 decision at 103 and then freshman Austin Meyers got the needed pin for victory with just four seconds remaining at 112. "It was quite an exciting match," McMahon said.

Earlier in the tourney, Falls lost to Little Chute 42-36, beat DePere 40-26, lost to eventual champion Owatonna (Minn.) 43-24, and beat Sun Prairie 55-24.

Guagliardo went 5-0 for his title. Going 4-1 on the day for the Indians were Stark, Andrew Warden at 152, and Kory Kleinhans at 171.

"We got to see a lot of mat time, which is what we were aiming for," McMahon said.

Menomonee Falls/Germantown/Hamilton boys swim

Just two days after a tough defeat to state power Hartland Arrowhead, the Indians pulled out an 85.5-84.5 nonconference dual meet decision over Berlin on Saturday.

"It was a better meet than Thursday (against Arrowhead)," said Indians coach Jim Weitzer. "We got a lot of good swims, especially out of our younger guys like Brad Kruppe and Christoph Rohrer."

The Indians, who also claimed the West Bend Diving Invitational title behind the winning 11-dive effort of defending state champion Nathan Cox (428.1), will now take part in the Greater Metro Swim Officials Invite at Homestead on Dec. 29 at 10 a.m.

In the 115-71 loss to Arrowhead, the Indians were led by the divers, as Cox turned in an amazing six-dive total of 332.35 and Ryan Thomann was second with a 228.9 score.

Other firsts went to Sean Kimmitt in the 200 individual medley (2:06.84) and Taylor Ladd in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.02). All three Falls relays turned in second place finishes. The 200 medley relay team of Ben Perry, Ladd, Kimmitt and Taylor Hernikl turned in a sound time of 1:43.99.

Ice Bears hockey

Heading into a major tournament Sunday through Tuesday at the Bradley Center, the co-op team that includes Germantown and Menomonee Falls is 4-4-1 overall this season.

The Ice Bears recently lost a tough 4-3 decision on Saturday to Neenah/Hortonville in which they surrendered all four goals in the third period.

Leading scorers for the team include Austin Haga of Hamilton (eight goals and six assists), co-captain Conrad Acheson of Slinger (seven and seven), and co-captain Carter Ypma of Falls (five and four).

Splitting goaltending duties are Germantown's Matt Schulte (two wins and 4.14 goals against average) and Trevor Collins (two wins, 3.33).

Other local players include junior defensemen Joe Sanicola (Falls), junior forward Cary Fischer (Germantown) and junior defensemen Dylan Krivoshein (Germantown).

The two West Bend schools are also involved in the large co-op team.

Other area basketball results

The Germantown girls stayed unbeaten behind two imposing North Shore Conference wins. The Warhawks got 13 points out of center Eliza Wortman in taking a 33-14 halftime lead and routing Milwaukee Lutheran 53-39, Friday.

On Dec. 15, a 19-6 third quarter run broke open a competitive game and the Warhawks coasted to a 51-38 triumph over Whitefish Bay as Wortman had 16, Melissa Klemm 10 and Kate Benson nine.

The Menomonee Falls girls team outscored visiting Bay View 20-0 in the first quarter and cruised to a 48-21 nonconference win last Friday as Kari Braatz had 13 points to lead nine players who scored.

The Germantown boys team got a good defensive effort from Malcolm Bowers against Milwaukee Lutheran star Chim Kadima (seven points) and outscored the Red Knights 23-10 in the first quarter in earning a 64-50 decision.

Zak Showalter had 13 points, while Bowers and Alex Lloyd had 12 apiece and Josh Mongan, 10.

On Dec. 15, however, it was a different story, as a resurgent Whitefish Bay team burst to a 35-18 halftime advantage and never looked back in a 64-49 win. Showalter was the only Warhawk in double figures with 13.
