Sports Wrapups: Dec. 14

The Menomonee Falls boys basketball team rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to blow past border rival Hamilton, 65-46, in a Greater Metro Conference game at home Saturday.

The victory, the team's fourth consecutive, improved Falls to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

The Indians' J.P. Tokoto led all players with 21 points as Falls outscored Hamilton, 46-24, in the second half. Conor Cassidy and Johnathan Phillips each added 10 points for the Indians as 10 players scored at least one point.

The victory came after Falls held defending Greater Metro Conference champion Marquette without a field goal for the first 13 minutes and 23 seconds of the second half to break open a close game and rout the Hilltoppers, 56-36, at home Dec. 8.

"We knew that they had a pretty aggressive 1-3-1 (zone defense) and that we had to make stops to pull away," Falls coach Ben Siebert said of the GMC opener. "They knew that we wanted to run and so they slowed it down."

Falls forced the ice-cold Hilltoppers into missing their first 20 field-goal attempts of the second half. Marquette hit just six free throws in those first 13-minutes plus of the second session as the lead ballooned to 24 (52-28). It took a goaltending call at the 2:37 mark of the fourth quarter to break the streak. By then it was much too late for Marquette.

Tokoto had 19 points while Jalen Ramey came off the bench to play a solid point guard and score 10 and Cassidy contributed eight.

Germantown boys basketball

Port Washington parlayed a 16-point third-quarter advantage into a 61-51 victory over visiting Germantown on Dec. 11 in a North Shore Conference game.

Germantown (2-1 overall, 0-1 NSC) had a 33-31 lead at the half before Port (3-0, 1-0) outscored the Warhawks, 22-6, in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Malcom Bowers led Germantown with 12 points and Zak Showalter scored 11.

Port's Josh Gasser, a University of Wisconsin recruit, led all scorers with 28 points.

Germantown was to host Whitefish Bay on Tuesday and will play at Milwaukee Lutheran on Friday.

Germantown wrestling

Jesse Thielke (130) and Cody Szohr (119) earned titles at Menomonee Falls' Marlett Invitational on Saturday to help the Warhawks finish seventh overall.

"The team looked great at times and also young at times," Germantown coach Casey Gabrielson said.

Both Germantown grapplers won all their matches by pin. Thielke, a two-time defending state champion, pinned Isaac Bodenlos of Westosha Central in 1:55 to capture the title. He pinned Stetson McCulley of Valders in 1:53 to advance to the finals after a first-round bye. He is undefeated this season.

"He is always a step ahead of his foes and knows exactly what they are going to do next … even before they know what they are going to do," Gabrielson said. "He sets up his moves up well in advance and continues to stun his opponents and amaze spectators. He is simply a pure technician who comes ready to wrestle every match. If you want to see high school wrestling at its best, come to a Germantown meet and watch him wrestle."

Szohr pinned Westosha Central's Casey Merrill in 3:04 in the finals. He also won by pin over Whitefish Bay's Joe Mahler in 3:12.

"This was Cody's first meet of the year; he was really excited to finally see some action," Gabrielson said. "He is a positive leader in the wrestling room and he makes the kids in the room better. He will be a force for us the rest of the year. First place and undefeated is not a bad way to start the year off.

The Warhawks posted a 45-21 victory over host Whitefish Bay on Thursday in a North Shore Conference dual.

Tyler Palzkill, Zach Baus, Thielke, Brandon Goesch, Cody Falls, Danny Krause, Eric Bloedorn, Garrett Boldt, and Joe Multerer all earned victories.

Goesch won in triple overtime while Boldt won in the first overtime in two of the best matches of the night, Gabrielson said.

"We are introducing very different technique than what the kids have seen over the past couple of years," he said. "They are not as comfortable just because it is so new and different to them. They are still building a trust and communication with the new coaching staff as well. Each week, we are seeing vast improvement though. We are seeing the technique peeking through in matches more and more as the season progresses. They are getting more comfortable and confident with the moves. We are very excited to see where we will progress to by the end of the year and years to come."

Menomonee Falls wrestling

The Indians' Korey Kleinhans (171 pounds) and Tony Guagliardo (215) won titles Saturday during Menomonee Falls' Marlett Invitational.

"Both are senior captains and leaders of the team," Falls coach Jim McMahon said. "(They are) tough, hard-working kids who are leaders on the team. Great role models in the school and in sports."

Kleinhans defeated Jake Beckert of Whitefish Bay, 4-3, to win his division. He improved his record to 10-2 in capturing his second championship of the season.

Kleinhans opened the invite by pinning Jared Zirbel of Westosha Central in 4 minutes, 53 seconds. He defeated Josh Kleinhans of Valders, 13-7, to advance to the finals.

Guagliardo won his title with a 5-1 victory over Oak Creek's Bryce Agg, also improving his record to 10-2. He pinned Slinger's Logan Galezio in 3:12 in the first round and pinned Tyler Coleman of Westosha Central in 58 seconds to set up the match with Agg.

Falls' Tyler Bross (285) and Danny Stark (103) both rallied from defeats to finish third.

Bross pinned Germantown's Joe Multerer in 2:50 to place third. Stark defeated Oak Creek's Joey Swick, 19-5, to earn his bronze.

Slinger won the invite with 569 points. Oak Creek was second with 560 and Falls fifth with 441.

Germantown girls basketball

Eliza Wortman scored a game-high 19 points to lead the host Warhawks past Port Washington, 51-46, in the North Shore Conference opener Friday night.

Rachel Hoft added nine points.

The victory was the fifth consecutive for the undefeated Warhawks (5-0 overall, 1-0 NSC). They were to play at Whitefish Bay on Tuesday and host Milwaukee Lutheran on Friday.

Falls girls basketball

The Indians earned their first victory of the season in Friday night's Greater Metro Conference opener, downing host West Allis Hale, 48-44.

Rachel Defnet poured in 21 points for Falls (1-2 overall, 1-0 GMC) to lead all scorers. Alex Poole added 13 for the Indians.

Falls hosts Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. Friday in another conference contest.
