Sports Wrapups: Sept. 22

Falls girls volleyball

Despite health issues at the critical setters' position, the Indians still managed to rout border rival Sussex Hamilton and finish second to the host Goslings in the Watertown Invitational last week.

"Dayna (Sammons) has been out more than a week with mono and may miss another two or three weeks," coach J.C. Bruns said, "and her back-up Emily Eyssautier has a back strain and has been trying to play hurt. We've been trying to work Sarah Wildish in there from time to time to relieve Emily and she has been playing well.

"And we've still been playing pretty well without clicking on all cylinders."

Falls will play in the powerhouse West Bend Sprawl on Friday and Saturday.

The Indians held up well at Watertown. They overpowered De Pere, Wisconsin Lutheran and Cedarburg in pool play and hammered Oak Creek 25-17, 25-15, in the semifinals. In the finals, they finally ran out of gas against Watertown, falling 25-18, 19-25, 15-9. Watertown ended Falls' season in sectionals last season.

Becca Fuchs had 35 kills, Eyssautier 82 assists, Taylor Golabowski 64 digs and eight aces and Chelsea Lee 19 blocks for Falls. Falls routed Hamilton 25-13, 25-8, 25-17, on Sept. 15.

With singles players Britany Dudzik and Jenny Graham leading the way, the Warhawks took fifth in the Cedarburg Invitational on Saturday.

Graham finished second in her flight, beating Port Washington (6-1, 6-1) and Wauwatosa East (6-1, 5-7, 10-6) opponents before falling to a Cedarburg opponent in the final. Dudzik finished third in her flight, beating a West Bend East opponent 7-5, 4-6, 10-6, in her consolation match.

"Jenny is playing very smart," said Warhawk coach Scott Bicknell. "She is able to figure out her opponents weakness early in the matches." Bicknell also praised the play of the doubles teams, noting that they're communicating well and controlling the net.

Earlier in the week, the Warhawks dropped a 7-0 dual meet decision to second-ranked in state Nicolet. Bicknell said that Dudzik played a very good match, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

The Warhawks won a wild 5-3, North Shore Conference decision over Cedarburg on Sept. 15.

Germantown (4-5-2), which will be at the Kettle Moraine Invitational on Friday and Saturday, took a 3-0 lead on host Cedarburg before the Bulldogs made it interesting. Mike Scherer had a hat trick and an assist for the Warhawks, including a score in the 74th minute after the Bulldogs had closed the gap to 4-2.

Other goals went to Chris Goiffre and Brad Bane. Travis Sheridan also had two assists for Germantown while Robert Huss made three saves.

Using a mix of front-liners and reserves, the Warhawks were an impressive second place in the seven-school Waukesha South Invitational last Saturday.

Germantown scored 66 points to trail only West Bend West (55). Gary Hackney led the Warhawks, taking sixth individually on the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 54 seconds. Other scoring runners included Matt Lehner in eighth (18:03), Tim Lydy in 11th (18:10), Muzahir Badani in 19th (18:27) and Zach Baus in 22nd (18:32).

Also running were Riley Kruger in 24th (18:41) and Austin Pethan in 26th (18:55).

Holding their own in an enormous field, the Indians finished 18th of 31 full teams in the Angel Invitational at UW-Parkside on Saturday.

Falls scored 451 points as Greater Metro Conference favorite Brookfield Central won with 101. Freshmen Mikayla Robertson in 53rd (16:45) and Jamie Ertl in 69th (16:59) led the way for Falls.

Other scoring runners included Katie Smalley in 105th (17:26), Kelly Koier in 110th (17:28), and Alyssa Barczak in 114th (17:30). Also running were Meghan Braatz in 118th (17:34) and Bryn Saunders in 127th (17:49).

Germantown football

Unable to hold up against a surprisingly physical opponent, the Warhawks saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an abrupt end Sept. 17 when host Whitefish Bay overpowered them, 32-6.

"They kicked our butts, no doubt about it," said veteran Germantown coach Phil Datka.

The loss dropped the Warhawks to 1-1 in North Shore play and 3-1 overall while the Blue Dukes improved to 2-0 and 3-1, respectively.

The physical advantage Bay had became no more apparent than late in the first half, when Warhawk punter Eric Kindler pinned the Blue Dukes back on their own one-yard line with Bay holding a 12-0 lead.

No matter, on the second play of the drive, back Brian Kroll (157 yards rushing with three TDs), hit the edge, as the Blue Dukes were successful doing all night, for 51 yards. Six plays later, on a fourth-and-seven play from the Germantown 21, quarterback Cal Ehrke hit end Paul Davis (six catches for 66 yards) with a perfect fade pass into the right corner of the end zone with just 33 seconds left in the half.

That backbreaking TD effectively ended the Warhawks' hopes. The scoring pass was one of five fourth-down conversions by the Blue Dukes on the night.

Bay outgained Germantown 336-211, and didn't give up an offensive touchdown. Germantown's only score came in the fourth quarter, as Ehrke was sacked in the end zone and fumbled with Germantown defensive back John Blaser recovering for the score.

Other than that, it was all Bay. Mike Fischer led the Warhawks with 17 carries for 75 yards. Top back Matt Schabel missed the game with an injury suffered in the Port Washington win the previous week.

The Warhawks will entertain Milwaukee Lutheran (0-2, 1-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Indians celebrated parents' night in a grand way with a 130-56 dual meet win over Divine Savior Holy Angels on Sept. 17.

Falls won 10 of 12 events en route to the victory. They will host the Greater Metro Conference Relays today starting at 6:30 p.m.

In the victory over the Dashers, Briana Botros and Grace Devine were double winners with Botros taking the 50-yard freestyle (26.58 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.61) and Devine claiming the 100 butterfly (1:03.85) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.83).

Other individual winners included Dana Kucharski in the 200 individual medley (2:23.24), Sarah Tighe in diving (238.45 points), and Emily Blackwell in the 100 free (59.13).

Falls/Hamilton also took all three relays as Sommer Semanek, Kucharski, Devine and Amanda Siehs won the 200 medley (2:00.16); Siehs, Blackwell, Haley Lucas and Botros the 200 free (1:47.03) and Semanek, Hannah Mast, Blackwell and Devine the 400 free (3:57.11).

The Warhawks could probably win more invitational titles this season if they just didn't have to run into fellow members of the North Shore Conference all the time.

Germantown fell into that trap Sept. 17, when it finished third in the 14-school Whitefish Bay Vanden Avond Invitational at Kletzsch Park. The Warhawks scored 93 points as North Shore-based state powers Bay (36) and Homestead (73) dominated the meet. Bay and Homestead entered the meet as the top two ranked teams in the state.

"This meet highlights just how tough it is," said Warhawk coach Nancy Pietrowiak. "This was a meet where pack running, working hard on the last mile and finishing were the main goals. The Germantown athletes have made some real improvements."

Germantown was paced by Caitlin Dillon in eighth (15:57) and Andrea Sielicki in ninth (16:01) while Liz Wendt was 11th (16:08), Mackenzie Erdmann 17th (16:21) and Andrea Brown 48th (17:28). Also running were Becca Rasmussen in 49th (17:30) and Amanda Brittain 50th (17:32).

Pietrowiak praised the efforts of Jessica Kretlow (season best) while freshman Sammie Gassner turned in her third personal best time in four races.

The Warhawks remained unbeaten in North Shore action at 3-0 with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-20 rout of Milwaukee Lutheran on Sept. 17.

Germantown got seven kills out of Taylor Neinfeldt, 14 digs out of Taylor Johnston, six blocks from Carley SanFilippo, 13 assists from Brittany Baxter and five aces from Bethany Baxter.

Earlier in the week, on Sept. 15, the Warhawks dropped a tough 25-13, 25-10, 25-21 decision to nonconference border rival and state power Kettle Moraine Lutheran.

The Warhawks will host their own invitational Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Menomonee Falls girls golf

The Indians Taylor Dory remains a steady force for Falls as the team prepares for post-season action.

Dory shot an 18-hole score of 90 to lead Falls to a ninth-place finish in the Waukesha County Championships on Sept. 17 at Wanaki, while Nicole Zywiec turned in a personal best of 105. Falls turned in a team score of 399 while Kettle Moraine won with 342.

Dory also paced the Indians with a nine-hole score of 44 at the Greater Metro Conference mini-meet at Westmoor on Sept. 14. Falls will now take part in the 18-hole league finale at The Broadlands today.

"We've been just a few shots short in the last few (GMC) meets but that's the way golf is sometimes," Indian coach Tony Pritchard said, "but if we perform well this week, we could leapfrog a couple of teams in the standings (Sussex Hamilton and Wauwatosa)."

In their toughest competitive week of the season, the Indians dropped decisions to top-ranked in state Brookfield East (4-2) on Sept. 15 and to Kettle Moraine (1-0) on Sept. 17 before beating Milwaukee Hamilton (1-0) on Friday.

The 1-2 mark on the week left the Indians at 9-6-1 overall.

In the win over Hamilton, the Indians got a goal from Stewart Van Horne (Owen Dwyer assist) as Falls won the evenly contested battle (Hamilton outshot Falls 13-11 as Ben Dederich made 13 saves).

Falls fell behind East 2-0, but battled back to tie the score on goals from A.J. Patterson and Charlie Jankowski before the Spartans scored twice more in the final 17 minutes. Falls and East (10-0-2 overall) had the number of shots on goal (11).

A second-place finish by the 300-yard butterfly relay team of Marin Thompson, Shannon Miller, Megan Taugher and Abby Schabel led the Warhawks to a seventh-place showing in the North Shore Conference Relays on Sept. 15.

"We were hoping to win a couple of relays but it didn't quite work out," said Warhawk coach Sara Petric. "This is always a difficult meet for us because we just don't have the depth for it. A plus for us this year was that we were able to compete in every race, which we weren't able to do last year."

The Warhawks, who will be at the Nicolet Sprint Invitational on Saturday, scored 38 points as Homestead won six events to cruise to the title with 98.

Germantown's butterfly relay was clocked in 3:01.85 as Grafton broke the meet record with a 3:00.51. No one was within 11 seconds of those two teams.

The next best finishes for the Warhawks were a third by the 400 medley relay and a fourth by the 200 medley relay. Petric praised the efforts of Kelly Theis, Terra Beketic, Lauren Utech, Lindsey Smith, Anna Balistreri and Kate Benson.

In a tough field, the Indians took seventh in the Milwaukee Marquette Invitational at Washington Park on Friday.

Falls scored 171 points as the host Hilltoppers (ranked second in state division I) won with 50, while top-ranked in division 2 Shorewood was second with 80. Fifth-ranked DI Neenah was third (92) and ninth-ranked DI Madison La Follette was fourth (97).

Nate Paulson led the Indians with a 12th place showing of 16 minutes, 57 seconds on the 5,000-meter course while P.J. Weyer was 25th (17:32).

Falls girls tennis

The Indians were competitive in a pair of matches last week.

They completed a quadrangular meet at Sussex Hamilton on Sept. 17, getting wins from Hayley Schlueter at first singles, Tessa Norman at fourth singles and from the first doubles team of Caitlyn Stockhausen and Claire VanAlstyne.

On Sept. 15, Schlueter highlighted a 6-1 loss to regional power Brookfield East, by beating the Spartans' Lauren Schuette. Schuette was East's top singles player last season but has been playing the two spot this year for East. Falls coach Bryant Buhr called it a "great win" for Schlueter.

Buhr also cited singles player Donya Khadem and the doubles team of Erin Thomas and Amy Bartos for their efforts.
