Thielke wins Junior Greco-Roman trials
Two-time Germantown WIAA State wrestling champion Jesse Thielke recently upset FILA Junior National Champion Ryan Mango of the New York Athletics Club to capture the 121 pound title at the 2009 FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
FILA junior athletes are 17 to 20 years old and include many of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers as well as many talented high school athletes. Since Thielke does not turn 17 until later this summer, he had to petition the organization under a "wild card" exemption to enter the trials. The final decision was given by the USA National Wrestling team coaching staff and only with a medical certificate from a doctor.
Thielke had spent a week training at the Olympic Center prior to the team trials in order to get better acclimated to the high altitude of Colorado Springs. He will return to the Olympic Training Center in early July to train with the Junior, Senior, and other foreign world teams before leaving for Ankara, Turkey, in August for the World Team Championships.
Thielke, who is also on the USA Cadet FILA Greco-Roman National Team (15 to 17 years old), will travel to Managua, Nicaragua, to compete in the Pan American Wrestling Championships later in August. Later this month, Thielke, who is also a member of the Wisconsin Junior National team, will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla., for the USA National Team Duals.
