Germantown School Board alters details of administrator benefits

Germantown - The Germantown School Board on Monday approved the preliminary administrator benefit plan that has a tentative implementation date of July 1.

The preliminary benefit plan eliminates long term care and one-day emergency leave. It also increases the retirement age. The preliminary plan will be taken to the district leadership team in early December. Superintendent Susan Borden said she will bring the feedback from the leadership team back to the board at a future meeting.

Though the decision was unanimous, Board Member Diana Kline questioned why the board is waiting to finalize the plan and set a tentative date for July 1.

"We feel we owe it to the administrators who would be covered by this to pose any questions they might have, they might have some things we aren't attuned to about their positions," Board Member Bruce Warnimont said. "As far as implementing on July 1 rather than instantaneously is because it represents a big shift in a lot of people's ways of life."

The preliminary administrator benefit plan sets the retirement age at 57, up from 55. Retirement benefits are available to administrators who are at least 57 years old, have worked for the district for a minimum of 10 continuous full years and apply for retirement before Feb. 15 of the school year in which they retire.

The plan also changes the number of personal leave days administrators are allowed to accrue. Administrators are granted one day of paid medical leave per month of contract service. Annual leave accrues at the start of each new contract year. Administrators could accrue more than 100 days. That is capped to 70 days in the new plan.

Administrators are allowed six personal leave days annually. These days can be given to other employees in need should that employee have used all their days and have emergency health care needs.
