Condo fire causes $70,000 in damage

Germantown police officer treated for eye injury

Aug. 19, 2013

Germantown — A fire that broke out in a Germantown condominium Friday caused $70,000 and sent a police lieutenant to the hospital for injuries to his eye.

A piece of glass scratched the lieutenant's eye during a forced entry to a condominium on the W9700 block of Riversbend Circle. He has since been treated and is back to work, said Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell. There were no other injuries.

The fire broke out at 6:25 p.m. in a four-family condominium. A resident heard a small explosion and saw smoke. The fire broke out in the second floor bathroom and was caused by a chemical reaction, Hoell said.

The fire started underneath the bathroom vanity. It dislodged the water connection under the vanity, which helped to stop the fire; however, that caused water damage to the floor and ceiling, Hoell said. The fire was contained to the bathroom and part of the adjacent bedroom.

Damages are estimated to be between $65,000 and $70,000.
