Two squad cars totaled on hazardous roads
Germantown — Two Germantown police squad cars were totaled in separate weather-related car accidents Tuesday.
Shortly after 3 p.m., a semitrailer hit a four-wheel drive squad used for the canine officer just north of Lannon Road in the southbound lane of Highway 41.
Police Chief Peter Hoell said State Patrol is investigating, but reports from the scene state the semitrailer was driving too close to the squad as it passed, and the trailer hit the squad, causing it to spin.
The officer driving the squad was injured with a bump to the head and bruising to the chest. He was transported to Community Memorial Hospital. The dog was not in the vehicle, Hoell said.
The vehicle is likely a total loss, Hoell said.
Ten to 15 minutes later, a tow truck rear-ended another squad that was responding to the first accident. The officer was setting up flares for the first accident and was not injured, Hoell said.
Hoell said it was a case of a vehicle not moving over a lane for emergency vehicles.
He expects the second squad to be a total loss as well.
Prior to these two accidents, the department had responded to six vehicles in ditches, one minor accident and a drunken driver who hit an embankment about 11 a.m.
