Falls man charged with 7th drunken driving offense
West Bend — A Menomonee Falls man was charged Monday with his 7th drunken driving offense after he was pulled over Saturday on Highway 41 in Germantown and was seen trying to drain what was left of a one liter of vodka while a Washington County Sheriff's lieutenant returned to his squad car, according to a criminal complaint.
A Washington County sheriff's deputy saw Carl W. Vogel, 49, take the liter bottle from the floor of the passenger side of the vehicle, remove the cap and hold the bottle between his knees while he lit a cigarette, the complaint says.
The deputy, who was standing to the rear on the passenger side of Vogel's car, knocked on a window, startling Vogel, who dropped the bottle's cap, the complaint says.
Vogel failed a series of sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.25, more than three times what the state considers to be evidence of intoxication.
A records check showed Vogel has been convicted six times of drunken driving since December 1990. Vogel was charged with drunken driving and could be imprisoned 10 years if convicted. He also was charged with driving with a revoked license. Vogel's license was revoked in February 2002 and never reinstated, the complaint says.
