GT bounces back to rout slumping Blue Dukes

June 23, 2009 10:30 p.m. | Both were pre-season favorites in the North Shore Conference, but now the Germantown and Whitefish Bay baseball teams were just two squads looking for a push in the right direction Tuesday night.

And it was the injury-plagued Warhawks who found their way back to the right road with a five-run first. After the quick start, they never looked back, routing a talented, but clearly frustrated host Blue Duke team, 14-2, Tuesday night.

The Warhawks (4-6 in the North Shore and 7-9 overall) were coming off a dispiriting 11-0 loss to Slinger Monday night and needed the quick start to restore confidence, said coach Parrish Wagner.

"This proved a lot of what we we've been talking about all summer," Wagner said. "We're a team of momentum and this is a game of highs and lows. You can't let yourself get too high and you can't let the lows hold you down."

"With us, the roller-coaster continues."

Wagner resigns GT baseball position to spend more time with family

By Steven L. Tietz

July 30, 2010 10:35 a.m. | Shortly after the Germantown baseball team's emotional 2-1 WIAA state quarterfinal loss yesterday morning to Waukesha West, Warhawk coach Parrish Wagner called the team together, congratulated them on a fine effort and then told them that he was resigning after six years in order to spend more time with his children.

"My son (Hruz) is 10 now and playing Little League and I haven't had the chance to coach him yet," said the father of three. "I've just discovered that I'm missing too many of my son's activities so I wanted to focus on the family more."

Wagner just led the Warhawks to their first state tournament berth in 24 years and a 14-17 overall record.

He was a three-sport star athlete at Germantown in the late 1980s and played collegiate baseball himself.

Athletic Director Jack Klebesadel said the vacancy will be posted soon.

Warhawks' tournament run ends quickly

By David Cotey

July 29, 2010 12:29 p.m. | Germantown baseball coach Parrish Wagner knew that if his team was going to make its first state tournament appearance in 24 years a lengthy stay, his Warhawks would have to play perfect baseball.

In a WIAA State Summer Baseball Tournament quarterfinal against Waukesha West at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point on Thursday, that did not happen.

A pair of base-running miscues and a key infield error paved the way to a 2-1 West victory as Germantown’s remarkable postseason run came to an end.

“We always talk about giving a team 22, 23 outs,” Wagner said. “Well, we gave them 22, and we only made them make 19. We got ourselves out twice and those were big innings.”

Germantown led, 1-0, before giving up a pair of runs in the sixth. A leadoff error by shortstop Jordan Infield started West’s rally. Two batters after the miscue, Ryan Solberg ripped a triple to center field off Germantown reliever Brian Keller that tied the score.

Driving school loses bid to use district space

By Jennifer Matasek

July 27, 2010 6:48 p.m. | Class will not be in session at Kennedy Middle School for A-Plus Driving School students.

The School Board unanimously denied an application from A-Plus on Monday after board member Diana Kline raised concerns about allegations of price-fixing with direct competitors in the past.

The state Department of Justice has reprimanded A-Plus about the allegations and issued an order for A-Plus to stop price-fixing with competitors, designating where competitors can open driving schools and "threatening rivals with pricing below cost." The case was closed in early January of this year.

"It would look bad on this district if we approved this application," Kline said.

A-Plus has complied with the state's ruling, and still plans to open in Germantown despite the board's decision, owner Peter Schmirler said in an interview. "I want to give the community a choice," he said.

Germantown, Menomonee Falls baseball photo galleries now online

July 25, 2010 7:22 a.m. | Sixth-seeded Germantown won its third straight tournament game by one run and earned a berth in this week's state finals with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Menomonee Falls yesterday. We've just posted a photo gallery from that game, a gallery from the Warhawks' sectional semifinal victory over Slinger and a gallery from Falls' semifinal win over Brookfield Central.

The Warhawks' Tyler Thicke pitched a complete game against Falls, allowing only an unearned run. Germantown sophomore outfielder Jimmy Doedens hit a two-run homer in the third inning.

Menomonee Falls advanced to the sectional title game with a 1-0 victory over Brookfield Central. The Indians ended the season at 33-11 and had won 13 consecutive games before falling to Germantown.

Thicke pitches upset-minded Germantown to state

By Steven L. Tietz

July 24, 2010 9:26 p.m. | Eight days ago, at the end of a disappointing, mistake-filled senior night loss to Pius XI, Germantown baseball coach Parrish Wagner talked about the upcoming WIAA playoffs, how the Warhawks would set their pitching up in order to play three games.

An idea that would take them all the way through to the sectional final and a possible trip to the state tournament. A tall order for the sectional's sixth seed with an 11-16 record going into the event and scarcely any momentum behind it.

"But these kids just believe in each other," said one Warhawk parent, shortly after Tyler Thicke pitched the underdog Germantown team to its first state tournament berth since 1986 with a highly unlikely 2-1 win over sectional top seed Menomonee Falls Saturday evening.

"Obviously, its the thing everyone hopes for," said a happy Wagner afterward. "...You'd like to say you saw it coming, but you never know. We had Tyler (an Indiana recruit) built up slowly, playing it safe the entire way and then (sophomore Brian) Keller comes through in the semifinal (a 3-2 eight-inning win over Slinger earlier in the day) which allowed us to save Tyler (for the final)."

"But no, you can never really see anything like this coming."

Upset special: Germantown beats Falls to head to state

July 24, 2010 7:59 p.m. | Germantown got a two-run home run from Jimmy Doedens in the third inning and a six-strikeout, two-walk effort from pitcher Tyler Thicke to upset top-seeded Menomonee Falls, 2-1, in a WIAA sectional final Saturday night in Germantown.

The unlikely win means the sixth-seeded Warhawks (14-16) are headed to the state tournament, which starts in Stevens Point on Wednesday.

We'll post a complete game story and photos from the final soon on GermantownNOW.com and MenomoneeFallsNOW.com.
