Family Promise - A Worthwhile Experience
I had a great experience last evening when I had originally felt some hesitance at exposing myself to the opportunity. The experience was being involved in a program called Family Promise that my church home decided was an appropriate way for the congregation to reach out to those who needed a little help.

End Space Shuttles?
Our country has made the decision to end the Space Shuttle program. The last flight is approaching and the one remaining shuttle is to be retired following the conclusion of that flight. From that point, we will be dependent upon Russia to ferry people and supplies back and forth from the orbiting station.
It Ain't Workin'
We seem to be losing our concept of ‘self-control’ in eating. We rely more and more on the government doing the job for us through regulation. The problem is this: it ain’t workin’.
A New Combined Misery Index?
The Misery Index has been with us since 1948 but is probably most remembered during President Jimmy Carter’s time in the White House. It has classically been the sum of the current rate of unemployment and the current rate of inflation. Using that definition, the current Misery Index is 12.8%.
"Longhand" Writing Going Away?
I can still remember, vaguely I will admit, trying to learn how to make my hands and fingers behave so that I could write ‘longhand’ using cursive letters. Cursive writing was a real effort for me; so much so that by the time teachers were no longer insisting that cursive be used, I began to print because it was easier and neater and quicker. I think I made that break from the established norm in 6th grade after Miss Sheridan finally quit nagging me.
Prevarication Is Not Becoming
It is becoming increasingly more difficult to separate the truth from prevarication when it comes to the whole issue of our country ‘defaulting’ on its debt obligations. One should not accuse the President of the United States of being a liar, but it would help if he were a bit more forthright and didn’t engage in the kind of demagoguery that is laced with prevarication*.
Finally...Friday!
Heavy subject matter is officially forbidden for today since it is Friday and we have had way too much serious stuff with which to contend already given debt limits and such. The heaviest part of today’s blog is the name of the sentences that follow (paraprosdokian).

An Inner City Obituary
Four strikes and he was done. A young man from the ‘inner city’ died on Wednesday. His name was “Trell”. He lived near the corner of Locust and 24th street…that was his “block”. He graduated from Bay View High School in 2007. He was 22 years old.

Public sector labor organizations took a potentially big hit in the approval of the Wisconsin budget as crafted by the Governor and the Republican-dominated Assembly and Senate. The outcry has softened a bit now and I wonder what the ultimate effect of all this will prove to be?

We are being treated to grand theater (if you are a political junkie) coming from the Capitol of our country. The debt ceiling must be increased by August 2nd, or so we have been told by the Administration, or we will be in danger of defaulting on our debt.
