Obesity in Wisconsin

Wisconsin, Quality of Life, Healthcare, Economy

Gallup had a piece out today discussing obesity in America.  27.1% of Wisconsin’s population qualifies as obese according to the body mass index calculation.  If you know your height and your weight, click here for your body mass index.

Obesity is a major health issue in America today.  Obesity is a killer, or at best it is debilitating if not actually deadly.  A third of Americans are overweight and another third are obese.  Obesity is a factor in heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke and kidney disease.  Obesity health care costs are expected to exceed $300 Billion by 2018, more than double that reported in 2008.

This is a significant problem and one that most of us can control if we choose wisely…and if we want to control it.  We see it around us daily if we are at all aware.  We might be among those that are obese.  If we are obese, we need be mindful that it is something that can be controlled in most situations.  It takes the desire to want to control it, and it takes the willpower to make that happen.  It takes knowledge about how to be a healthy eater, and an exerciser.  Our primary care physicians are very able to give us ideas on how to approach getting obesity under control.  There are many good websites that make controlling obesity easier in that they provide knowledge and encouragement.

Check your body mass index today and determine where you rank.  If you are not in the best place, please do something to change that.  You’ll feel better and have a better overall quality of life.
