Cain Still Standing
The Cain campaign organization is an interesting animal amongst campaign organizations. It doesn’t seem to have a lot of high power politicos, has no big names involved and seems to run on a day-to-day cycle that sometimes catches them sleeping.
In spite of that, Cain continues to lead in polls over Romney and the rest of the flock. Only time will tell what, if anything, the “scandal” of sexual harassment claims will do to him…or for him. I say “for him” since he had a surge in campaign contributions when this news broke a few days ago.
Now several campaigns are pointing fingers at each other as the culprits that arranged the leak of these bits and pieces. Mark Block, the very unlikely campaign head for Cain, has pointedly said that the Perry campaign is behind this uproar. Next, we hear the Perry campaign saying that it was done by the Romney campaign. Then a third person raises claim to having been concerned with Cain’s approaches.
Cain’s has been a maverick among campaigns. He has not been too concerned about running what others claim is an unorthodox campaign and so far, at least, the way he does things has not been bad for him. A question could be raised about how much better he might be doing if he had different staff and had followed a different approach in his campaign, but he is still in the lead.
If the claims being made alleging sexual harassment have any substance to them they will greatly affect his stature among the Republican candidates. Only time will tell us if this story has legs. We can count on the main stream media to exhaust every effort to find the people and to validate their claims, and then to make the information available to us over and over again.
I am surprised that nothing of significance has been surfaced so far. 24 hours is a lifetime in the news cycle and several of those cycles have passed us by while the press has dug frantically to find enough to get Cain out of the race.
We shall see.
